SMOKING ADDICTION

Positive Mind Care and Research Centre is a leading mental health care  facility of Delhi – NCR, dedicated to helping individuals to overcome Major Depressive Disorder and reclaim their joyful lives through a unique breakthrough technology called Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS), which can reach significant depth and breadth of the brain and produce broad stimulation and functional modulation of targeted brain areas to help treat MDD.

Deep TMS treatment features unique, patented coils that are fitted into a helmet, which is secured snugly to the patient’s head during the treatment. We are using BrainsWay’s therapy, which has been utilized in over 60 clinical trials worldwide. The company’s device has been FDA approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) since 2013, FDA cleared (De-Novo) for the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) since 2018, FDA cleared as an aid for short-term Smoking Cessation since 2020, and has now received an expanded indication for Anxious Depression.

What is Smoking Addiction?

Smoking addiction is a chronic and compulsive dependence on tobacco products, primarily cigarettes, containing nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco that acts as a stimulant, leading to physical and psychological dependence. Smoking addiction occurs when a person repeatedly uses tobacco products, leading to changes in the brain’s reward system. When nicotine is inhaled through smoking, it quickly enters the bloodstream and reaches the brain, where it stimulates the release of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, which is associated with pleasure and reward. This reinforcing effect leads to a desire to repeat the behavior, creating a cycle of addiction.

Smoking addiction can have significant and severe consequences for an individual’s health. Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide and is associated with numerous serious health conditions, including:

Respiratory Diseases: Smoking increases the risk of developing chronic respiratory conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer.

Cardiovascular Diseases: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart diseases, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and stroke.

Cancer: Smoking is a primary cause of various cancers, such as lung, mouth, throat, esophageal, pancreatic, and bladder cancer.

Aging and Skin Damage: Smoking accelerates the aging process and can lead to premature skin aging and wrinkles.

It’s essential to remember that smoking addiction is a complex and multifaceted condition with serious health implications. Seeking appropriate treatment and support is crucial for those struggling with smoking addiction to improve their health and quality of life. Quitting smoking and breaking the cycle of addiction can significantly reduce the risk of developing smoking-related health conditions and lead to overall better well-being.

SMOKING ADDICTION DEMOGRAPHICS

According to the World Health Organisation, there are 1.3 billion tobacco users, which is roughly 1 in 8.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of smoking addiction, also known as tobacco addiction, can be both physical and psychological. These symptoms are indicative of a compulsive dependence on tobacco products, primarily cigarettes, due to the presence of the highly addictive substance nicotine. Here are the common symptoms of smoking addiction:

Cravings: Frequent and intense urges to smoke, often triggered by various cues or stressors. Smokers may feel a strong need to smoke at specific times of the day or in certain situations.

Tolerance: Over time, individuals may develop tolerance to nicotine, leading to the need to smoke increasing amounts of tobacco to achieve the desired effects or satisfaction.

Withdrawal Symptoms: When attempting to quit or reduce smoking, smokers may experience unpleasant physical and psychological symptoms known as withdrawal. Common withdrawal symptoms include irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, increased appetite, and strong cravings for nicotine.

Continued Use Despite Harm: Despite being aware of the health risks associated with smoking, individuals with smoking addiction often continue to smoke and find it challenging to quit.

Loss of Control: People with smoking addiction may have difficulty controlling the amount and frequency of smoking. They may find themselves smoking more than intended or trying unsuccessfully to cut down on their smoking.

Neglect of Activities: Smoking addiction can lead to the neglect of other activities or responsibilities, as individuals may spend a significant amount of time obtaining, using, and recovering from the effects of tobacco.

Social and Behavioral Factors: Smoking addiction may impact social interactions and behaviors. Smokers may plan their day around smoking breaks or avoid situations where smoking is not allowed.

Coping Mechanism: Smoking may become a coping mechanism to deal with stress, anxiety, or other emotional challenges, leading to a psychological dependence on cigarettes.

It’s essential to recognize that smoking addiction is a serious health concern with severe health consequences. Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death worldwide and is associated with numerous health conditions, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and various types of cancer.

How does Deep TMS Work ?

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that has been studied as a potential treatment for various neuropsychiatric conditions, including smoking addiction. While the research in this area is still ongoing, Deep TMS has shown some promising results in helping individuals with smoking addiction. Here’s how Deep TMS may help in treating smoking addiction:

Targeting Reward and Craving Pathways: Deep TMS can be applied to specific brain regions associated with reward processing and cravings, such as the prefrontal cortex and the insula. These brain areas play a role in the reinforcement and motivation aspects of addiction, including smoking.

Reducing Cravings and Withdrawal Symptoms: By stimulating targeted brain regions, Deep TMS may help reduce cravings for nicotine and alleviate withdrawal symptoms that individuals experience when trying to quit smoking.

Modulating Neurotransmitters: Deep TMS can influence the release and activity of neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, which are involved in the reward system. By modulating these neurotransmitters, Deep TMS may impact the pleasure and reinforcement associated with smoking.

Enhancing Self-Control and Decision-Making: Some research suggests that Deep TMS may improve cognitive functions related to self-control and decision-making. Strengthening these abilities can be beneficial in resisting the urge to smoke and making healthier choices.

Long-Term Effects on Craving Reduction: Studies have shown that Deep TMS sessions can lead to long-lasting effects on reducing cravings, making it a potential treatment option for maintaining abstinence from smoking in the long term.

Personalized Treatment: Deep TMS allows for individualized treatment by targeting specific brain regions relevant to each person’s smoking addiction. This personalized approach may lead to more effective outcomes.
